"Last week Rob was the first person I called to tell him I booked an amazing part in a farce called A Comedy of Tenors at Pierson Playhouse, a theatre in the LA area. My scene partner at the audition and I were panting on stage after galavanting around in the highly physical and farcical pace when the director literally stood up and told me I made his day! I was thrilled to share the news with Rob when I booked the part, but mostly I wanted to thank him. If it weren’t for his guidance in scene study, I honestly don’t know that I would have booked this part. Everything I’ve been learning in class prepared me to crush that audition and truthfully embody this character. In the past year Rob encouraged me to stretch my acting muscles and tackle the genre of farce, admittedly I was intimated. How does one walk that delicate tightrope and balance the absurdity of the situations and characters with the grounded truth? "It’s a belief I hold that ‘acting’ can’t be taught.However, Robert Colt comes closest to the best ‘teacher’ I ever had and luckily he was my first; Lloyd Richards. It was the inaugural year of NYU’s School of the Arts, (currently Tisch) and I was 19 and transferred from 14 years of Catholic education to a ‘conservatory’ in the Lower East Side of Manhattan adjacent to Fillmore East in 1969. Not since then has a ‘teacher’ of acting created such an environment, in the room he commands, of a gentle communication and great compassion for the performer of that art. I still believe it can’t be taught, it’s an innate gift, but spend your money wisely and give yourself a nurturing man, an actor himself, which, for me, increased his authenticity.
You won’t find anyone else like him doing this; Lloyd Richards & Billy Hickey are acting & teaching elsewhere at present.
